What is Dragonbane?
Dragonbane is a fantasy adventure RPG that pairs accessible procedures with dangerous situations and a light touch. A d20 skill check is generally looking for a low result, unlike many familiar d20 fantasy games. This distinction matters when a player arrives from a system that celebrates high totals. The tray provides a check die and separate damage presets so those different questions stay visible.
How to use the presets
Use a d20 for a basic skill check and compare it with the relevant rating. The boon helper rolls two d20s and selects the lower; the bane helper selects the higher. Apply the complete rules for when those dice are granted and how conditions interact. Damage uses its own numbered dice. The page does not track skill levels, Willpower, armor or the special consequences attached to extreme results.
The Boon preset shows both d20 results and retains the lower number. It does not add them together.
Practical table tips
- Explain the low-roll goal to new players before the first check. It avoids celebrating a result that does not meet the intended skill rating.
- Resolve boons and banes before loading a preset. Two opposite adjustments should not automatically become four d20s.
- Keep damage groups named by their source, particularly when a weapon or effect changes the die size.
Dragonbane dice FAQ
Is a high d20 always good?
No. Use the roll-under procedure and the game's dragon and demon rules.
Does it apply armor?
No. Armor and damage resolution need information the tray does not receive.
Can I roll more boon dice?
You can edit the count, but apply the game's actual procedure; the selected mode still reads the lowest or highest as labeled.
Character conditions, pushes, critical effects and combat resources are not fully automated.
Independent, unofficial dice aid. Game names identify the intended use; their publishers do not endorse this page. These original explanations are not a replacement for the rules.
