4dF · four dice with three symbols
Fudge dice move a result up, down, or nowhere. Four of them combine into a small adjustment from −4 to +4, often used with a character rating in Fate or Fudge. Reading the symbols is the useful little ritual here.
The pictured set gives 1 + 1 + 0 − 1 = +1. Add a skill rating of +2 when your rules call for it, and the adjusted result becomes +3. Keeping the raw symbols visible makes those two stages easy to explain.
Raw 4dF result+1
Give two D6 faces to each symbol. That preserves equal one-third weights for plus, blank, and minus. Adding the ordinary face numbers instead would produce a different 4d6 calculation.
A blank contributes zero to the dice adjustment. It does not dictate what happens in the story. Compare the adjusted result with the target your game supplies, then use its success and consequence rules.
Four three-way results create 81 ordered outcomes. Nineteen total 0, while only one totals +4 and one totals −4. The distribution favors modest changes without making the extremes impossible.
